Integrity's core value - Safety and how to prevent slips, trips and falls

Walking the Talk: Reducing Slips, Trips, and Falls

Winter brings icy conditions that are a daily challenge for our team and our customers. We recently focused on increasing awareness around Slips, Trips, and Falls.

Walk Like a Penguin

Integrity Walk like a Penguin mascot

Our penguin mascot helps remind us how to navigate walking on icy surfaces safely. Maria, a member of our accounting team, shared a simple but effective reminder: “Stay aware of your surroundings and choose the safest path—take a few extra seconds to select the best route. When walking across slippery surfaces, walk like a penguin!”

‘Walk like a penguin’ means walk flat-footed with knees slightly bent and feet slightly outward, take short, slow steps and keep their arms free for balance.

Proper footwear is another key factor in preventing slips on ice. Sean, a lumber material handler for IBP, stresses the importance of traction: “Ice cleats are a big help—they give us extra grip and confidence on slippery surfaces.”

Keep the Workplace Safe

Grady, Operations Supervisor at IBC, emphasizes the importance of keeping workspaces clean: “Clean up spills promptly and remove debris from workshop floors and the yard.” Colin, an IBC Wood Processor, adds that sawdust on the floor can be just as hazardous as ice: “A broom is the best tool for helping to prevent slips and keeping everyone safe. Sweep your work area regularly, and do an extra sweep prior to high-traffic periods.”

Brandon, an IPS Crew Foreman, highlights the importance of fall prevention at heights: “Whether it’s securing footing, clearing platforms, or wearing proper harnesses, every step matters. Use handrails and stable support whenever possible.”

Stay Alert, Stay Safe

A recurring theme is always awareness. Whether inside or out, winter or summer, one of the best ways to prevent slips, trips, and falls is to stay alert. Avoid distractions, keep your eyes on your surroundings, and take those extra precautions to ensure safety for yourself and your coworkers.

Safety is a shared responsibility, and at Integrity, we believe in a team approach. By staying mindful and looking out for one another, we create safer spaces for everyone. We continue to make safety a priority—it’s not just one of our core values; it’s part of who we are.
